The Urdu language started from poetry. In the beginning there were no novels in the Urdu language however soon the trend of novels and short story writing picked up in Urdu language. So in fact, the Urdu literature started off at a very good base. Both the poetry and the prose were well received by the masses as it used to stimulate the minds intellectually.

As with any other literature the Urdu literature too continued to evolve. The evolution is a test of the health of any literature and the Urdu literature successfully passed this test. The Urdu language has always been fortunate enough to have extremely good writers and poets on board.

However there is one acute problem which can sap the vitality of the Urdu literature. This problem is the plagiarism in the Urdu literature. Unfortunately the plagiarism in the Urdu literature is much more than the literature of other languages. There are several reasons for this trend. The main reason is the lack of ethical awareness among the masses and publishers desire to make money through the wrong means.

The following are the some ways through which the plagiarism in the Urdu literature can be fought and be eventually eradicated.

Passing and implementing strict copyright laws and punishments

If we see the developed nations in this regard, we would immediately notice about their strict copyright laws and policies. It is because the governments of these nations deeply respect their artists, poets and the authors.

Introducing strict punishments for people who plagiarize stuff is the right way to deal with this problem.

Cooperation of different countries, especially India and Pakistan

The Urdu speaking communities are all over the world. Most of the literature activities are going on I India, Pakistan, U.K and the Middle East. Sometimes the publishers lift the intellectual property of a person residing in a different country and publish it with a different name. The original author does not know what to do about it. This practice is very common between the people of India and Pakistan. Both countries do not respect each other right in this regard. The need of the time is that these countries should cooperate with each other to fight the plagiarism.

Creating awareness among the masses

The people of the subcontinent too are not much aware of the terms, "artists' rights" or the âintellectual property'. So they do not know how to respect it. Public awareness must be created in the subcontinent, so that people stop buying plagiarized Urdu books. This trend would discourage the publishers who publish plagiarized books.

Controlling the price of the original books

Sometimes the extremely high prices of the books by the original authors push people to look for the copied versions. Many people are aware that it is plagiarism and it is wrong but they say that they cannot afford buying original Urdu books. There must be a price control authority for the books of Urdu literature to keep the prices in check.

The novel is an indicator of the development of a language. The Urdu novel started very late when compared to the poetry of the Urdu language. Nevertheless, the trend of novel writing in the Urdu language picked up pace very quickly.

Recognition of citizenship and its challenges for the Urdu speaking camp dwellers in Bangladesh

Al-Falah Bangladesh is a social and welfare organization which was formed in Dhaka in June1981. It was registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare in 1984 to work for the social, cultural and economic rehabilitation of the Urdu speaking community living in Bangladesh. The organization evolved its objectives giving priority to the health, education and skill development needs of the community.

After the signing of the tripartite agreement among India, Pakistan and Bangladesh in 1974, and completion of the category-wise repatriation of stranded Pakistanis under that agreement, many people at that time had observed that a large number of Urdu speaking populations would not be able to reach Pakistan and they would need to adjust their future in Bangladesh. With the passage of time, the political nature of the problems of the Urdu speaking community gradually emerged as a humanitarian issue in Bangladesh.

The repatriation movements in Bangladesh faced several ups and downs in between 1978 and 1993. During that period many camp dwellers kept their hopes alive for repatriation. However, majority of the Urdu speaking people who were living outside the camps was compelled under the emerging urban social and cultural set ups to reshape their future as Bangladeshi citizens by integrating with the mainstream.

Around 160,000 camp dwellers remained "stateless" as neither Pakistan, nor Bangladesh recognized them as their nationals. The concerned authorities in Bangladesh never brought them under the fold of on going social and economic development. Dependent and reliant largely on relief and charity, they were socially and economically excluded. As a result the level of poverty increased manifolds ruining two generations of the Urdu speaking camp dwellers.

Al-Falahâs efforts for social, cultural and economic rehabilitation of the camp dwellers faced stiff resistance from many quarters in and outside Bangladesh. Yet the organization campaigned for "development" rather than âreliefâ.

With the support from Manusher Jonno Foundation, (a local donor agency) UNHCR and UNESCO, several research works and surveys were conducted by Alfalah to collect necessary data and determine the social and cultural status of the camp dwellers. The findings were documented and disseminated among the civil society, NGOs, CBOs (community based organizations), UN System in Bangladesh, International Human Rights Organizations and local media with a view to making them aware of the human rights situation of the camp dwellers. Under the advocacy programs, Al-Falah projected the issues of the camp dwellers through the media, met and discussed with high government officials on the issue of their citizenship and persuaded the Election Commission to enroll them as voters so that they may also take part in the local and national elections as equal citizens of the country. Al-Falah also organized rallies, human chains, meetings, workshops and roundtable to project the issues of the Urdu speaking community and mobilize support for the solution of those issues.

Apart from research & advocacy, Alfalah initiated several development programs in health, education and economic sectors. In Geneva Camp, the largest among the 116 settlements, Al-Falah Model Clinic provides preventive as well as limited curative services to mothers and children. It also delivers pre and post natal, safe motherhood and family planning services. Al-Falah Commercial School, Al-Falah Model Tutorial Centre, and Al-Falah Vocational Training Centre have helped many young people in getting computer skill, education up to secondary level and skill on various trades. These beneficiaries are now socially and economically established in the society. Some of them have come out from the camp life and now live outside the camp.

In early 2007 Al-Falah introduced a self-help education and skill development program under a new project named âCommunity Development Centreâ(CDC). The CDC provides sponsorship to the Science and Commerce students who live in camps to continue their education up to the degree level. In lieu of financial assistance, some of them teach the community children in the Foundation School and some coach the SSC students on computer skills.

At present there are 8 Foundation Schools, established in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Ishwerdi and Syedpur where 265 children are being prepared to get admission in primary schools next year. 20 students have completed their computer training course and another 20 are under training. The funds and computers have been given by the affluent and philanthropists of the community. Al-Falah has an ambitious target for 40 Foundation Schools, to be established in another 36 camps and provide computer skill to 80 male and female students by the end of the current year. If the above can be achieved, it would bring about a substantial improvement in the lives of these unfortunate people.

After long delay the government of Bangladesh, however, decided on 5 September 2007 to give citizenship to the Urdu speaking camp dwellers, enroll their names in the voterâs list and issue them the national identity cards. However, the recognition of citizenship will not solve all the social, cultural and economic issues. The government needs a policy and plan for the rehabilitation of about 160,000 people as equal citizens of the country. There exists no such policy and plan. The present caretaker government is constitutionally not in a position to undertake this task of policy formulation which means that the camp dwellers will need to wait for an elected democratic government in Bangladesh which is due by the end of 2008.

Considering these aspects of the rehabilitation issue, Al-Falah with support from Manusher Jonno Foundation, has already drafted a 5-year strategic plan for their rehabilitation with dignity and equal status in the main stream of the society. The draft plan has been developed with consultation of the civil society, NGOs, CBOs (community based organizations), and human rights activists and institutions and legal experts. However, the self help education & skill development program under the CDC remains the cornerstones of the strategic plan in this context.

Urdu is one of the most widely spoken languages in the Indian subcontinent. Other than that, communities all over the world speak it. In total almost 4 million people, speak the Urdu language.

Several factors lead to the development of Urdu language. The four most important of all the factors are given below.

1. Development of Urdu by speaking

TheUrdulanguage was developed among the soldiers of the British Army who belonged to different nations. The word â Urdu' itself meansâArmy'.To communicate with each other fluently, these soldiers used to speak in an amalgam of Persian, Arabic and Turkish languages.

However, very soon the language reached to the Royal courts. Actually, the language was easier than the Persian language. So the Royals also liked it. In those times, speaking Urdu became one of the trendiest things. Soon the Hindu population too started to speak it, by including many Sanskrit words to the language.

2. Development of Urdu through poetry

The Royals of the Indian subcontinent were very interested in the poetry. Amir Khusro was the first man who attempted Urdu poetry in the 13 th century. It was a huge success. However, for another century no one prominent dared to experiment in Urdu poetry. In the 18th and 19th century, poets gave a major boost to the Urdu poetry. The royals too appreciated it in every way. They used to hold Mushairas in their courts and used to pay monthly stipends to the poets. Other than that, they used to bestow valuables upon their favorite poets.

3. Development of Urdu through prose

Unlike the Urdu poetry, Urdu short story or novel did not become a trend. The major reason is that the Royals were never interested in the reading. However, after the decline of Mughals and in the era of the British, a very intelligent man attempted to write an Urdu novel. The name of the man was Deputy Nazir Ahmed and the name of the novel is Mirat ul Uroos. Despite the fact that it was the first novel of Urdu, the novel became a huge success. Even today the novel is popular and in demand. In fact, Deputy Nazir Ahmed can be called the first and the most prestigious institution of the Urdu novel.

4. Development of Urdu through journalism

The Urdu journalism was late to pick up as compared to the Urdu poetry. However, as compared to the Urdu novel it picked up quite soon. In fact, when the atrocities of the British rose gradually, many prominent Hindus and Muslims took notice. So they started monthly, bimonthly, and weekly digest with focus on the current affairs and political satires.

Those magazines also had a dose of the ethics and the morals to be introduced among the Muslims and the Hindus both. It is needless to say that even the starting of the Urdu journalism contributed a lot to the mental awakening of the people of the subcontinent.

In fact, if it were not for the Urdu poetry, prose and journalism, the people of subcontinent might not had realized their worth and fought to drive the British out of the subcontinent.

This article explores some of the most significant reasons that why the Urdu language has been contaminated. Learning these reasons is the first step towards the revival of the Urdu language.

1. Trying to strip the status of the regional languages

In Pakistan Urdu was declared the national language by Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah in Dhaka. This was a huge mistake. It was okay to declare Urdu the national language. However, right from the inception of Pakistan, the regional languages were never given any importance or status.

In fact, this had been a big cause of the partition of the East Pakistan from the west. It was but natural for the Bengalis that they loved their language and wanted it to be their national language. However, Bangla was never recognized and resultantly they felt that it is an effort to take away their roots and identity form them.

Recently the same thing happened in Baluchistan. Nawab Akbar Bugti passed a bill to make Balochi language compulsory from grade 1 in the schools of Baluchistan instead of Urdu. Nevertheless, after his murder, Pervez Musharraf reverted to Urdu, causing a lot of hatred among the Baluchis.

2. Relating Urdu to the religion

Many other people do not feel connected to the Urdu language because it has always been related to the Islam, excessively. The language should have an international and harmonious outlook, which Urdu has lacked.

3. Bollywood's influence on Urdu

The Indian film industry has never been kind to Urdu. The Bollywood movies are popular all over the world. People see them and pick Urdu-Hindi phrases from them. It is an unfortunate fact that in Bollywood scripts and songs, the Urdu language is often distorted. Sometimes wrong words are used contextually. At other times, the pronunciation is simply pathetic. Alternatively, Urdu is contaminated with too many rustic Hindi words.

4. Failure of the older generation to pass Urdu heritage to the young generation

It is a sad fact that our older generation did not make serious efforts to involve their children in peaking Urdu. Even today, the parents who know excellent Urdu do not realize the importance of teaching it to their children. Sadly, they are so obsessed with the English language that they make their children learn English right from the early childhood.

5. The lack of promotion of Urdu and incompetency of the Urdu teachers

Urdu has never been promoted properly. The society overall is responsible for this trend. The decline of Urdu and the lack of promotion of Urdu has become a vicious circle for the doom of the language. Other than that, in the schools the Urdu teachers are not competent. Teaching a language is an art. The teachers today lack the abilities of teaching a language to the children.

The Urdu language is hundreds of years old. This language was made up by the junior ranked soldiers; however, it found acceptability in the royal courts. The Urdu language is not the mother tongue of the most of the people of the Indian subcontinent. Yet it is an interesting phenomenon how it has penetrated among the masses, which never used to speak anything other than their mother tongue.

Initial penetration of Urdu Language

Initially Persian was the language of the royal courts. However, the Mughals found special interest in Urdu for the sole reason that it was a mix of several languages. Their vision let them see that if they promote Urdu, it would become a source of harmony for so many people from different ethnicities in the subcontinent.

Urdu poetry

In the times of the Mughals, the Urdu poetry was always promoted. The royals found a special affinity for the poetry. They used to allocate resources separately for the scholarships of the poets. Thus, more and more people used to attempt at the Urdu poetry.

Urdu prose

In the British Raj, along with Urdu poetry, the Urdu journalism was also a way to reach the masses. In those times, the poetry too was dominantly regarding the current affairs and the state of Muslims in the subcontinent. The first Urdu novel came out in 1868. It was an instant hit.

Current penetration of Urdu language

Times are changing rapidly. The Urdu poetry saw a peak in the 18th and 19th century. However now it is of mediocre nature. Other than that, the Urdu journalism and novel contributed towards the development of Urdu before. Now the language is developed. The means of entertainment mostly contribute to the spread and promotion of Urdu language.

Urdu popular fiction

In Pakistan, there have been various digests for the fiction. These digests have contributed a lot on spreading Urdu to different regions of Pakistan. Their stories are always very interesting and gripping. Therefore, people read them profusely.

Urdu songs, Ghazals and Qawalis

The Urdu songs, Ghazals and Qawalis have always been a great source of the spread of Urdu. The credit goes to the poets, singers and the musicians who work hard on every piece. Even internationally, the Urdu Ghazal and Qawali are renowned. People love them so much and naturally, they pick Urdu words from these melodies.

Urdu movies

In all the regions of the Indian subcontinent (including Pakistani and Bengali regions), the Bollywood movies have a huge fan base. These movies are in Hindi language, which is just a slight variation of the Urdu language. Resultantly people pick up words. The regular viewers can even converse in Urdu with great ease.

Ismail Merchant once gave a very wise statement regarding the language used in the Bollywood movies.

He said, "A few words of Hindi appear here or there, but it's all Urdu. I feel that if the popular culture, which is what Hindi films are, uses Urdu, it's not going to diminish".

The short messages service (SMS) is written means of communicating that have become very famous as people find it easier to write than to verbally pass across messages. There are SMS for every occasion and in as many subjects as one can think of ranging from love, birthday, friendship or simply appreciation SMS. The Urdu SMS are the form of communication used mostly by the people of Asian origin and are written in the Urdu language.

The basic factor considered when writing an Urdu SMS is the recipient and the purpose for which it's being written. Sometimes depending on type of phone the writer is using, there can be inclusion of non-word items such as pictures and animation effects which make the message more captivating to the reader or make the message clearer.

There are many categories of these SMS. Urdu funny SMS are usually exchanged between friends as a way of getting rid of a bad mood or just having a good time. Decent SMS are shared in the formal circles or when addressing a respected person. For instance when addressing an employer or parents. The other form of Urdu SMS is the fool SMS usually between people exchanging a light moment or who want to have fun.

The husband-wife and girl-boy SMS is more of a romantic type of message that aims at passing messages of love shared between the couples. Urdu jokes can also be passed in the form of an SMS and this can be either a decent or naughty jokes. Others are dosti SMS, sardar SMS and maskharay. Urdu SMS can also be religious messages especially as Islamic SMS that are passed between the faithful mostly for inspiration purposes during the month of Ramadan. However some SMS may be in form of Urdu poem.

Creativity is very important when writing an Urdu SMS as it shows how much the message means to the sender as well as adding a personal touch to the entire message. However there are a number of companies that offer a service where they submit well-written SMS to subscribers at a fee.

Question by jenn p: How do you say,"I'm sorry, I dont know how to speak.............." in any langauge? I work in a call centre in the Greater Toronto Area. I have recently begun trying to learn how to say ," I'm sorry; I dont know how to speak..." in a few lanaguages, just to be polite. This has worked to my adantage at work, and now is becoming a hobby.If anyone would be so kind as to contribute, please use phoentic english if you can, as well as your own forgein language so pronunciation would be easier :) these are some that i have already, please correct me if you see these are wrong-- Japanese: Moushiwake arimasen,Watashi wa Nihongo ga hanasemasen.Eigo ga wakarimasuka? Dutch: Het spyt me, Ik spreek geen Nederlands. (het spait muh, ik sprake gayn naydurlands) German: Es tut mir leit, Ich spreche keinen Deutsh. As i said, this article promotes and review my new site on urdu poetry " urdu.ucoz.com ".

But before that i would like to tell why i have chose to build a site on this topic. Well my language is urdu, and i can see it on the verge of it's death in my country india, which is actually it's birth place. Urdu was the govt's official language in luckhnow some years back, but today there is no one in those government offices who can read and write urdu. And in other parts of the country too urdu is considered to be a lower language, even by the muslims. Hindus think it is the language of muslims, and surely i can see the time coming when muslims will see it as the language of their ancestors. To show it's inner beauty and sweetness i made this site, i know my site urdu.ucoz.com is a small effort for such a big task, but better and greater than doing nothing.
